After a brief hiatus, my Gimmick or Good? column at Comics Should Be Good is back with a look back at 1993’s The Maxx #1, with pencils, inks and plot by Sam Kieth and script by William Messner-Loebs. For the uninitiated, Gimmick or Good is a recurring feature I write for CSBG where I look at comics from the 1990s with “gimmick” covers (chromium, holograms, glow-in-the-dark, etc.) and I review the interiors to determine if the comic was all gimmick, or actually good. The Maxx was adapted into a television series on MTV in the mid-90s and its first issue for Image comics featured a glow-in-the-dark variant. Did I think it was gimmick or good?
