Sorry to learn you are taking a break, but we will be here for you when you return.

Blogging can be a chore and if you need to walk away for a bit, no one is going to fault you for that. I find I can manage once a week or so at Longbox Graveyard but there are definitely times when I wonder if I can keep the string going. I find it helps to have regular Wednesday columns and to get several blogs ahead, so I can take "blog vacations" for a week or two and readers are none the wiser.

Good luck, see you soon I hope!

The Medusa comment you could just chalk up to Spidey doing what he always does; saying something intended to get his opponent angry and thus less able to plan an intelligent course of attack.

And I don't see his worry for what might happen to the Black Widow if she fell as particularly sexist. BTW, in the BW's own (brief) series, there was always a revealing scene in which she was taking a shower or changing her clothes, not notably necessary to the plot. Now that was sexist. (And it worked; I bought every issue).

Since The Black Widow is featured in Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth storyline, does anyone else feels that she should be one of his reoccuring crime fighting partner as a alternative to The Black Cat? I figured since The Black Cat has crossed over to Daredevil's world, I feel that an exchange for The Black Widow could be ideal since we rarely ever see Spider-Man and The Black Widow working together. I feel that she should have been one of his longstanding crime fighting partners. I like to see more team-up stories between them. Don't you agree?

I've always wrestled with the depiction of women in comic books, not just Spider-man. Even this week with the newest release of ASM we got Silver Sable making an abrupt pass at Spider-man after randomly playing tonsil-hockey with him a few issues back. There are plenty of dimensional female characters in comics, but there are also more low points to their characterization than there are for males.

All in all a nice review. As a Venom fan, this is my take:

While I HATE Venom on a team (thunderbolts, dark avengers, secret avengers), I think this one is bar far the best for the character to grow. From The Avengers point of view, you're right - it is silly to bring the symbiote on board. However, in their defense they are looking more at the man in the symbiote rather than Venom. I'm mean c'mon, their the freakin avengers; if he gets out of hand I'm sure they can take him down (a lot more easily than the Hulk). From Venom's point of view (as well as Remender's character development), this makes perfect sense. Venom went awol and the governement did not have control anymore, so The Avengers fill that need. It also creates more tension between Flash and (one of his) addictions, the symbiote, since he cannot have it whenever he wants. For me, I think Avenger-izing Venom is a necessary evil in order for readers (who may of given up on him in the 90s) to realize he is not a one dimensional, brain eating, Spidey villain anymore.
As far as Spidey knowing who he is, I'm sure that will happen this year. While Spidey made Venom (no pun intended), my hope is that Spider-Man isn't showing up every 5 seconds and that Venom can have adventures that don't revolve around Spider-Man.

Cool, man. The first comic I bought off the newsstand was Marvel Tales #71 that reprinted the fateful Amazing Spider-Man #90, also with Doctor Octopus. After that, I got hooked on Marvel.

Cool story...as a fellow Catholic who remembers the things given up during Lent as a kid (mainly candy) comics was an interesting choice. The story also resonates with me as this was the first Amazing Spider-man comic I ever bought - brand new off the shelf when I was in 5th grade as my teacher told us to bring something in to read to class - even a comic book! It was a great book to have as my first AS issue and like your self I been chasing Amazing ever since. I sold off all my collection in late 80's but started collecting again in 2000 (right after I caught the fever again after the first X-Men movie). Over the last twelve years I have almost completely re-built my AS collection (and the highlight was getting back AS 121!). My remaining Holy Grail of issues to still get are #1, 2, 4 and 5...someday, someday.

I think that by meditating on the value of this particular comic book -- and thinking about it through the years since you were a kid -- that you may have more effectively honored the intent and spirit of Lent than if you'd given up something trivial and easly forgotten. What you selected to sacrifice was more deeply personal than sweets or soda or whatever, and that you so struggled with the temptation of ASM #121 means that you learned something critical about the nature of sacrifice that persists with you to this day. Nice.
