I remember reading the Jackal stories as they came out and being absolutely fascinated by the puzzle of his identity. But I despised the cop-out ending to the series, with Professor Warren suddenly coming to his senses and freeing Ned Leeds, and then being killed along with the clone of Peter.

Granted, this may be a stress in order to defend my thesis here, but I would say aspiring to run one of the world’s biggest organized crime rings, while not global in vision, is at least a pretty big thing. Plus, I’ve long associated crimebosses with a “World Is Mine” mentality. To run something so big, dangerous and corrupt, you have to be willing to take on anyone.

I can’t recall the Green Goblin ever wanting to take over the world. If memory serves, his biggest ambition was to be the crime boss of NYC. In other words, he just wanted the Kingpin’s job.

It’s funny you should mention the Jackal today, I just posted a review of the recent ‘Original Clone Saga’ tpb:

I thought the Jackal worked in his early appearances, but he should have stayed dead after he “died” in ASM#149. But I agree with you,he’s just not interesting enough to keep coming back over and over again.
I quit collecting ASM during the 90s Clone storyline, so I won’t be reading ‘Spider Island’, Jackal or no Jackal.

Picked up the one-shot (and a lot of the other mini-series). On my “to-read” pile. I’m also awaiting ASM #668 so I’m a bit behind on where things are at in the main story. Stupid subscription service delivers things nearly a month late.

I don’t agree with you 100% on this one For one this can be a way to make the villain into the upper echelon of Spidey’s bad guys and have him be the “Spider Island” guy and less the “clone guy” . We’ve only seen him once since the clone saga and that was in a DD / Punisher mini. Yes, he’s a science guy so he’s a perfect fit for the role he’s playing. Bust also keep in mind that he’s working with / for someone. That’s a big piece of the puzzle. (I’m honestly wondering if it is that Gwen clone – what ever happened to her?)

Another thing – sure guys like Doom and Magneto take the heroes head on, but there’s plenty of Kingpin, Owl, etc.. type of players that try to stay away and have others fight for them. It shows their intellect over the even C-D class guys that try to rob banks and such.

I don’t know if you bought it, but the New York City 1-shot tie-in to Spider Island came out last week and I just read it today – TOTALLY HYSTERICAL! You gotta get it!

I think Dan Slott & company went with the Jackal because they needed a mastermind-type villain, but Doctor Octopus was used too recently and this doesn’t seem like the kind of thing the Kingpin would do. But yeah, the Jackal does seem a little far down the B-list for basing a crossover-event on.
